Meet Dr. Shirah

Dr. Gina Renteria Shirah

Gina Renteria Shirah MD, FACS is a bilingual, Spanish-speaking, Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon. Her passions and specialties include chest wall reconstruction, surgical wound care, and education. She is also an advocate for wellness and work-life balance. Her experience in leadership includes previous Trauma Medical Director at HonorHealth John C. Lincoln – a level one trauma center in Phoenix Arizona. She was the surgical clerkship director and a member of the faculty of the General Surgery Residency program at HonorHealth John C. Lincoln.

She currently serves as the Chief of Surgery at HonorHealth John C. Lincoln and enjoys working closely with an interdisciplinary team of specialists to treat patients. Given her training in both burn and critical care, she has expanded surgical wound care treatment at HonorHealth and opened a thriving wound
clinic in 2018.

Dr. Shirah is an active member of the Women’s Physician Leadership and Diversity of Equity Inclusion Committees. She works with teams across the HonorHealth System as well as members of the community to develop a multidisciplinary approach to health disparities. clinic in 2018.
She was instrumental in creating and opening a Lactation suite that debuted in 2021 at John C. Lincoln Hospital to support working mothers and provide them with a clean, comfortable environment to effectively express and store milk during working hours.
Dr. Shirah is a recent recipient of the Community and Citizenship Award for commitment to the community, voted on by her peers. In 2023, she also received faculty awards for commitment to surgical education, voted by surgical residents, and awards for commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity.
Dr. Shirah is a Wisconsin Native who attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 2007. Her general surgery residency was completed at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ. In addition, she also completed both a Burn Fellowship at the Arizona Burn Center and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ.
