Grafting and Skin Substitutes
Skin Grafting
Skin grafting is often considered in the appropriate wound bed. This procedure requires a surgery to transfer skin from a part of the body (donor site) to the wound bed (recipient site). This option is chosen in patients with an adequate, healthy wound as the transplanted skin does not have blood supply and only survives by the nutrients from a healthy wound.
Skin Substitutes
Skin substitutes is a general term for a variety of materials used to cover wounds either temporarily or as permanent coverage. They can be made of biologic, synthetic or biosynthetic products. Each product has different qualities as well as advantages/disadvantages. These products can be applied both in the inpatient and clinic settings
